Find Santa Clara County Inmates

Santa Clara County inmate search is handled by the Sheriff's Office through its public ATIMS jail roster. Anyone can search for Santa Clara County inmates by name and birth date, by PFN, or by booking number. The roster lists people booked into the Main Jail Complex in San Jose and the Elmwood Men's and Women's facilities in Milpitas. Results show booking number, name, race, sex, commit date, and custody status. A detail page adds housing, bail, and the next court date. State prisoners and federal detainees are not in this roster and must be looked up through separate state and federal locators.

Official Santa Clara County Inmate Search Portal

The Sheriff's Office runs its public jail roster on the ATIMS Inmate Search platform. The portal lives at santaclara-inmatesearch.atimsle.com and is open to the public with no login. The page is a single form with name, birth date, gender, PFN, and booking-number fields, plus Search and Clear buttons. The Sheriff's main site at sheriff.santaclaracounty.gov links to it from the Custody Bureau menu. Results pull from the live booking system, so people booked or released in the past few hours can take time to appear. The Custody Bureau notes the system books about 30,000 people each year.

The ATIMS roster covers all three county jail sites. Booked persons in the Main Jail at 150 West Hedding Street, the Elmwood Men's Facility at 945 Thompson Street, and the Elmwood Women's Facility at 701 South Abel Street all appear on the same search. The portal does not cover people held in state prison under the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, federal inmates held by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, or people held only by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. For state custody, the CDCR locator is the right tool. For federal custody, the BOP locator is the right tool. Court records and case files are searched through the Superior Court portal, not the jail roster.

The Main Jail Complex page on the Sheriff site lists facility details. The official Main Jail page shows the address, phone, and operating notes.

The Main Jail handles intake for the whole system, so most new bookings touch this site before classification. After classification, many inmates move to Elmwood, which is why the roster shows housing changes within a single booking.

Required Search Fields

Santa Clara is stricter than many county jail rosters. A name alone will not run. The portal requires Last Name plus First Name plus Birth Date, or in place of that triple, either a PFN or a booking number. If a user clicks Search without one of those valid combinations, the page throws a clear alert: "PLEASE ENTER LAST NAME, FIRST NAME and BIRTH DATE OR PFN OR BOOKING NUMBER TO SEARCH!" Last names and first names are auto-uppercased and trimmed before the query runs. The birth date control accepts mm/dd/yyyy but sends the value to the API as YYYY-MM-DD.

The ATIMS portal also exposes optional fields. A middle name field is built into the generic component but may not display in the Santa Clara skin. Gender is a dropdown that defaults to All Inmates. PFN is the Sheriff's internal personal file number, sometimes shown on a jail receipt or visiting form. The booking number is unique to one custody event for one person.

Field LabelTypeRequiredNotes
Last NameTextConditionalRequired with First Name and Birth Date for a name search. Input is uppercased.
First NameTextConditionalRequired with Last Name and Birth Date.
Middle NameTextNoPresent in the generic ATIMS component; may not show in the Santa Clara skin.
Birth DateDate pickerConditionalPlaceholder mm/dd/yyyy. Sent to the API as YYYY-MM-DD.
GenderDropdownNoDefaults to All Inmates. Lookup values returned by the API.
PFNTextAlternativePersonal File Number. Standalone PFN search is allowed.
Booking NumberTextAlternativePlaceholder reads "Enter booking number." Standalone booking-number search is allowed.
SearchButtonYesTriggers the alert above if no valid field combination is present.
ClearButtonNoResets all filters.

Knowing the field rules saves time. A quick test with a fake name will simply bounce back the alert until a real combination is typed in.

How to Search by Name, PFN, or Booking Number

The roster is one of the faster county jail searches in California once the required field set is understood. Most users come in with a name and rough birth date.

  1. Open the ATIMS portal at santaclara-inmatesearch.atimsle.com in any modern browser.
  2. Type the last name and first name exactly as they would appear on a driver license. Spelling matters. The system does not run loose matches.
  3. Pick the birth date from the date control. The placeholder is mm/dd/yyyy. If only the year is known, the search will not run; a full date is needed.
  4. Click Search. If the name plus birth date combination matches a recent booking, the results table loads under the form.
  5. If a PFN or booking number is known, skip the name fields, type the PFN or booking number into its own box, and click Search. This is the fastest path because PFN and booking numbers are unique.
  6. Click any row to open the Inmate Details page with housing, bail, and the next court date.

The ATIMS search form looks like this in production. The live page shows the same layout used in this walkthrough.

If the search returns no rows, the most common cause is a typo in the last name or a wrong birth-date year. Trying a PFN or booking number from the jail receipt clears that up.

Reading Santa Clara County Jail Search Results

Results come back in a table under the form. Eight columns are returned. Each row is one booking event, so a person with two prior bookings can show two rows. Custody Status is the column most users care about because it tells whether the person is still in jail or has been released.

ColumnWhat It Shows
PINBooking number for that custody event. Unique to the booking, not the person.
NameLast name, first name, middle name as recorded at booking.
PFNPersonal File Number. Stays with the person across multiple bookings.
Birth DateFormatted M/D/YYYY.
RaceRace code recorded at booking.
SexSex recorded at booking.
Commit DateDate and time of the booking event, formatted M/D/YYYY h:mm a.
Custody StatusShows "In Custody" or "Released MM/DD/YYYY."

A common point of confusion is the gap between PIN and PFN. PIN is the booking number for one trip through intake. PFN stays with the person for life. If the same person is booked next year, the PIN will change but the PFN will be the same.

Inmate Detail Page Fields

Clicking a result opens an INMATE DETAILS view with more data than the results table. A red RELEASED banner sits at the top of the page if the booking is closed or the releaseOut flag is set. For people still in custody, the housing location appears; for released people, that line is hidden.

FieldWhat It Shows
NameLast, first, and middle name as recorded at booking.
Booking NumberThe PIN for this specific booking.
Inmate ID (PFN)Personal File Number used by Sheriff staff for mail, visit, and money deposits.
Housing LocationFacility and unit while in custody. Hidden after release.
AdmittedBooking time formatted MM/dd/yyyy.
SexSex recorded at booking.
Total Bail Amount"NO BAIL," a dollar amount, "N/A," or the 99-cent placeholder verification message.
Visitation InformationLink to the Jail Visitation page and to the Sheriff visitor portal.
Next Court DateScheduled date, time, agency, and department name.

The underlying ATIMS data model holds more than the public template renders. Race, weight, height, eye color, hair color, arrest type, arresting agency, court location, court department, age, and occupation all live in the record. The public template skips most of these. Arrest entries with empty crime fields are filtered out, and certain case prefixes such as 52, 53, and SJV are not shown.

Bail Amount and 99-Cent Placeholder

The bail field is the source of most confusion on the Santa Clara roster. Four values can show. "NO BAIL" means the person is being held without bail. A clean dollar amount is exactly what it looks like. "N/A" means no bail value is recorded for that booking yet. The fourth value is the trickiest: a 99-cent placeholder that displays the message "Verify bail at the Main Jail lobby bail counter." That message means staff have not finished setting the bail in the system; it is not a real 99-cent bail.

To resolve a 99-cent placeholder, go in person to the Main Jail lobby at 150 West Hedding Street or call 408-808-2800. The bail counter staff can read the working figure from the booking file. Bail bond agents also know how to interpret the placeholder. The roster is updated as soon as the bail is keyed in, so a refresh later in the day will often show the real number.

Note: A bail amount on the roster is a snapshot. The Superior Court can change bail at arraignment or on motion, so always confirm the operative figure with the court before paying.

Main Jail and Elmwood Facilities

Three custody facilities feed into the same ATIMS roster. The Main Jail handles intake and pretrial men, the Elmwood Men's Facility handles sentenced and pretrial men plus minimum-camp housing, and the Elmwood Women's Facility houses all county-held women. The Custody Bureau reports the system is the fifth largest in California, with an average daily population of 2,900 and roughly 30,000 bookings per year.

The Main Jail uses a direct-supervision model in many units. One deputy oversees a locked module or dormitory of up to 96 inmates. Each person has a cell with a toilet, sink, mirror, and bed. Meals and programs run in a common day room with tables, chairs, and phones. The Main Jail's annual budget is about $76 million, and the facility runs with roughly 470 badge and civilian staff.

Visiting an Inmate After You Locate Them

Once a person is found on the roster, the next step is usually a visit. Santa Clara uses Online Visitor Registration (OVR) for both Main Jail and Elmwood. New accounts can register 24/7. Approval may take up to seven business days for Main Jail; the Elmwood page lists 2 to 4 business days. The Sheriff's visitation appointment page walks through scheduling.

Visits at the Main Jail run Thursday through Sunday. Each inmate may have two 60-minute visits per week. Up to two adults can visit at once, each getting 30 minutes. Children must be biologically related to either the adult visitor or the inmate, and an original or notarized birth certificate is required for each child.

The Elmwood schedule is different and depends on housing group. Most men's units run evening visits Monday through Friday. The minimum camp group has weekend morning and evening windows. The Elmwood Women visiting page lists the same address and similar rules. The Elmwood Women's visiting page shows the live schedule.

Elmwood rules cap visits at two 30-minute slots per week and one visit per day, with Sunday as the first day of the week. Up to two adults may enter at the same time. Visits can be scheduled up to 21 days ahead. Online visits must be booked at least 24 hours ahead. Same-day changes cannot be made online and must go through the visiting office during business hours. If the inmate is moved to a new housing unit, scheduled visits are cancelled.

Visitors with felony convictions or prior state prison time need written permission from the Sheriff under California Penal Code section 4571. The Sheriff also lists denial reasons: a no-contact restraining order involving the inmate, active probation or parole, an active warrant, being out on bail for an open case, prior convictions for violence or sex offenses, and any other safety risk flagged by jail staff.

The Sheriff visitor portal sits at sccso-visitorportal.atimsle.com.

What Information Is Not Public

The Santa Clara roster shows a slim slice of the booking file. The full file is not public. Several categories are blocked by policy, by state law, or by both.

  • Medical and mental-health information. Health data is protected and never appears on the roster or detail page.
  • Security classification. The score that drives housing and movement is internal only.
  • Suicide-watch and protective-custody flags. These are kept off public screens for safety.
  • Juvenile records. People under 18 are not in the public adult roster.
  • Confidential victim information. Names and contact data tied to victims are blocked.
  • Full prior criminal history. Only the current booking shows; rap sheets are not posted.
  • Certain case prefixes. ATIMS hides public display of cases tagged 52, 53, or SJV.

For a full criminal record, the right path is a Department of Justice live-scan request, not the jail roster. For court files, see the criminal records page and the Superior Court page.

Booking Process Overview

The Custody Bureau does not publish every intake step, but the sequence follows the standard California county pattern. Each step generates data that may or may not surface on the public roster.

An arrest by a Sheriff deputy, San Jose Police officer, or another agency starts the chain. The arrestee is transported to the Main Jail at 150 West Hedding Street. Intake staff run identification, photograph the person, and inventory property. A medical and mental-health screening follows. Classification staff then score the person and assign a housing unit, which may be in the Main Jail or at Elmwood after transfer.

From there the case moves to the court calendar. Arraignment in Superior Court usually happens within 48 hours of booking under California law, with weekends and holidays not counted. The court sets or confirms bail and the next court date. If bail is posted or the person is released on their own recognizance, the roster updates the custody status. People held without bail or who cannot post bail stay in custody until the next hearing.

Note: The booking number assigned at intake stays with that one event, so warrant returns and probation violations create new booking numbers even for the same person.

Sheriff Contacts and Custody Bureau

The Sheriff's Office is led by Robert "Bob" Jonsen, the 29th Sheriff of Santa Clara County. The Sheriff has been in law enforcement since 1986, served as Palo Alto Police Chief from 2018 to 2022, led the Menlo Park Police Department before that, and spent 27 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff homepage at sheriff.santaclaracounty.gov is the entry point for custody news, deputy contact, and public records.

The Sheriff homepage lists every bureau and links to live news. The Sheriff's official site ties together the Custody Bureau, Patrol, Court Services, and Professional Standards.

The Custody Bureau runs the jail system. The Office of the Sheriff sits at 55 West Younger Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110, and the Custody Bureau lists general office hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Custody Bureau divisions include Classification, Consent Decrees, Custody Administrative Services, Custody Support Services, Elmwood Men's and Women's Facilities, Jail Reforms, Main Jail Facility, Professional Standards and Compliance, and Restorative Services.

By the numbers the system is large. It is the fifth largest jail system in California, in the top 20 nationally, and one of about 100 jail systems with a population over 1,000. Average daily population is 2,900. Annual bookings come in around 30,000. Average length of stay is about 292 days. Those figures are why the roster sees so much daily turnover and why a search at 10 a.m. and another at 4 p.m. can show different results for the same person.
